Informazioni storia

This mosaic comes from near the church of Santa Bibiana and is exceptional for its size and polychromy. Several male figures, one of which is on horseback, and dogs, chase or observe animals of different species: bears, wild boars, gazelles. It represents the capture of animals that were used for games in amphitheaters. This is a recurring theme in many late antique mosaics that became established in North Africa and was also very popular with the imperial court. The fact that it was found in Rome and not in the provinces of the Empire makes it a unique document.
