This dancing satyr, which has come down to us without his arms, is based on a Hellenistic bronze original and depicts a completely naked, dancing satyr; his off-axis gaze and tousled hair emphasize his intoxication. Like other finds in the Boiler Room, it comes from excavations in 1879 in the area of the so-called Temple of Minerva Medica, later recognised as a nymphaeum. Subjects of this type refer to a Dionysian theme, suitable for the decoration of gardens and nymphaea. When the area fell into disuse, many of the sculptures, often fragmentary like this one, were used as filling material for walls.
